Turkmenistan opens new highway to boost international transit

Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on April 17 opened a section of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat high-speed highway linking the cities of Tejen and Mary in southeastern Turkmenistan.

According to the State News Agency of Turkmenistan, the construction of the 600-kilometers-long Ashgabat-Turkmenabat highway started in January 2019. The highway will consist of three sections: Ashgabat-Tejen (203 kilometers), Tejen-Mary (109 kilometers), and Mary-Turkmenabat (288 kilometers).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the development of modern transport corridors in the East-West and North-South directions is a priority for Turkmenistan, and the construction of the high-speed Ashgabat-Turkmenabat highway is another evidence of the revival of the ancient Silk Road in a modern format.

“Turkmenistan is located at the junction of two continents, and such a favorable location provides a huge advantage in the formation of an international transport and logistics corridor, the integration of the domestic transport sector into the global system and the expansion of trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties with partner countries,” the Turkmen president said.
