UK foreign secretary visits Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan

On April 22, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron arrived in Tajikistan as part of his visit to Central Asia.

In Dushanbe, Cameron met with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the parties discussed attraction of British investments to the mining, metallurgical, light, food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural sectors of Tajikistan, the Tajik president’s press service reported.

Rahmon and Cameron also expressed interest in the development of cooperation in production of green energy, transition to a green economy, and implementation of projects to promote the digital economy.

They also addressed bilateral cooperation in the water and climate problems, labor migration, and diversification of air routes between the countries.

Later on April 22, David Cameron arrived in Kyrgyzstan and met with President Sadyr Japarov.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on the prospects for Kyrgyz-British cooperation, including in the political, trade, economic, investment, energy, and transport spheres, the Kyrgyz president’s press service reported.

The parties also discussed the possibilities of expanding interaction between the two countries on issues of education and seasonal labor migration.

Cameron noted the great potential existing between the two countries.

Also on April 22, David Cameron held negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Jeenbek Kulubaev, who informed his British counterpart about potential areas of cooperation, including attracting investment, increasing trade turnover, joint development of rare earth metals using advanced technologies, and the transition to green energy.

Cameron informed about the UK’s interest in expanding partnerships with the countries of Central Asia and Kyrgyzstan, in particular. He also outlined priority areas of interaction in the economic sphere and emphasized the importance of expanding educational programs in Kyrgyzstan.

The British Foreign Secretary also announced his country’s readiness to help support small and medium-sized businesses in the Central Asian region by creating a special fund with an authorized capital of 19 million pounds.
