Two small hydropower plants launched in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov on July 22 attended the opening ceremonies of two small hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the country’s southern Jalal-Abad region.

One HPP, Kok-Art, is located in the Suzak district of Jalal-Abad region. Its construction began in August 2023. The plant has a capacity of 6.8 MW and an estimated annual electricity generation of 25 million kilowatt-hours.

Speaking at the ceremony, the head of state emphasized that this hydroelectric power plant will play an important role in the development of the region. He also noted the significant contribution of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz Development Fund to the completion of this plant in a short time. The total investment in the project amounted to $7.8 million. Half of this amount came from the Uzbek-Kyrgyz Development Fund and the other half from a private investor.

President Japarov said that the electricity produced by this plant will be enough to meet the needs of more than 10 thousand residents of the Suzak district.

Another HPP launched by the president was Kainama, located in the Toktogul district of the Jalal-Abad region.

The Kainama HPP has a capacity of 9.6 MW and will generate 39.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to meet the needs of residents of Uch-Terek aiyl okmotu (consisting of several villages) and part of the city of Kara-Kul.

President Japarov emphasized that the country has big potential to build small hydroelectric power plants. Noting that Kyrgyzstan is located at the source of Central Asia’s main rivers, the president said that the country had experienced chronic shortages of electricity, but over the past two years the country has made significant steps forward, improving the situation through the implementation of hydroelectric power projects.
