Deputy speaker of Uzbek parliament proposes banning propaganda of Soviet ideology

A Deputy Speaker of the Uzbek Parliament, Alisher Kadyrov proposes banning the “approval and propaganda of Soviet ideology”. In his opinion, the Soviet regime brought only misfortune to the Uzbek people, and also discriminated against them.

Kadyrov commented on the verdict handed down by the Samarkand Regional Court in a case of propaganda for the restoration of the Soviet Union.

On September 3, the court handed a three-year parole-like sentence to a local resident for his activities promoting the restoration of the Soviet Union. The 74-year-old man was found guilty of calling to disrupt the constitutional order in Uzbekistan. The charge against the man stemmed from posts on Telegram where he denounced the legality of the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 and cooperated with a pro-Soviet Russian group.

Deputy Speaker Kadyrov wrote on Telegram that he fully supports the court’s verdict: “The Uzbek people were humiliated by the Soviet regime and are still healing the grave wounds of the past. The Soviet ideology, which rejected nations, values and faith, brought disaster not only to the Uzbek people, but to all of humanity, and its remnants continue to do so to this day.”

Kadyrov spoke out for banning the propaganda of Soviet ideology and symbols. “Of course, this sad period of our history should be analyzed and discussed, but its approval or propaganda should be considered not only a crime against the constitutional order, but also a betrayal of our people and our ancestors, who became victims of the bloody regime.”
