On March 13, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon signed the Agreement on the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
The Agreement was signed during a state visit of President Rahmon to Kyrgyzstan.
Last month, chief negotiators from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan reached the final agreement on the demarcation of disputed sections of the border, providing for mutual exchange of some border territories.
President Japarov emphasized that “The signing of the Agreement on the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is a fateful historic event. This step will make a significant contribution to strengthening the security, stability and sustainable development of not only our states, but also the entire Central Asian region.”
Japarov stated that the development of friendly and good-neighborly relations with Tajikistan is one of the key priorities of Kyrgyzstan’s foreign policy. “Our countries are linked by ancient history, traditions and culture. We have similar positions on key current regional and international issues. All this creates a solid foundation for further strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. Thanks to joint efforts, political will and the desire of our peoples for peace and good neighborliness, we are jointly laying a solid foundation for constructive interaction,” he said.
The Agreement will now be submitted to the parliaments of the two countries for ratification. It is expected that Japarov and Rahmon would exchange the ratified copies of the Agreement at the forthcoming summit of the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in the Tajik city of Khujand on March 31.
Today, Japarov and Rahmon also took part in the ceremony of reopening the Kairagach and Kyzyl-Bel checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border via video link.
The reopening of these checkpoints is an important step in strengthening relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, contributing to the development of trade, economic cooperation and friendly relations between the peoples of the two countries.
