Uzbek author brings Silk Road legends to life in magical four-part children’s series

Uzbek writer, cultural figure, and storyteller Gulchekhra-begim Makhmudova invites young readers on a breath-taking journey through time, legend, and imagination with her four-part children’s book series, Adventures of the Spirit of Time, now available in English from Hertfordshire Press.

Originally published in Russian between 2021 and 2022, the series quickly won the hearts of readers across Uzbekistan. In 2024, the first volume was honoured with the Hertfordshire Press Award for Best Adaptation for Children, recognizing its unique blend of cultural heritage, imaginative storytelling, and educational value.

Makhmudova’s vibrant narrative follows four intrepid friends — Amir, Salma, Tohir, and Zuhra — who stumble upon a mysterious ancient well and awaken the Spirit of Time, a mystical guide who leads them on thrilling adventures across centuries and continents. As they journey through the historical and mythical landscapes of the Silk Road and beyond, the children uncover forgotten stories, confront universal challenges, and learn timeless lessons about friendship, bravery, and identity.

The series stands out for its seamless blend of fantasy, science fiction, and historical legend, offering young readers both excitement and enlightenment. Each book transports its audience into richly detailed worlds rooted in Central Asian folklore and Silk Road history, making it a perfect gateway into the cultural treasures of the region.

Bringing Makhmudova’s world vividly to life are the stunning illustrations by Zilola Khamidova, whose artistry captures the essence of each scene with colour, depth, and emotion. The English-language edition, skilfully edited by John Farndon, retains the cultural authenticity of the original while ensuring accessibility and engagement for international audiences.

“These stories are my gift to the next generation,” says Makhmudova. “They are a bridge between the past and the future — between cultures, lands, and hearts.”
