In 2024, 98.9% of all Kazakhstanis had access to centralized water supply services. Of them, 99.4% of urban and 97.8% of rural residents are provided with quality drinking water supply, according to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
In 2020, 93.8% of Kazakhstanis had access to drinking water supply, in 2021 – 95.6%, in 2022 – 96.5%, and in 2023 – 97.8%.
Last year alone, Kazakhstan built and reconstructed 3,100 km of water supply pipelines.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasized that drinking water cannot be used to water gardens. Water-saving technologies must be used, and a habit of careful water consumption must be introduced. “We need to look for new underground sources of water,” the president said.
In 2024, Kazakhstan established a National Hydrogeological Service, Kazhydrogeology. It explores for underground water resources in water-deficient regions of Kazakhstan, with particular attention to providing the west of the country with drinking water.
Groundwater reserves in Kazakhstan are estimated at about 40 billion cubic meters, including 15 billion cubic meters ready for use. The country annually uses 1.2 billion cubic meters of water for drinking needs.
