Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to speed up the issue of opening an additional checkpoint for freight vehicles on the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border, as well as to strengthen cooperation in the water and energy sector. This was the result of the meeting between the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov and the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov in Almaty on February 1, the Kazakh prime minister’s press office reported.

At the meeting, Smailov emphasized that Kyrgyzstan is a strategic partner and fraternal state for Kazakhstan. “Today, Kazakh-Kyrgyz relations are at a qualitatively new level,” the Kazakh Prime Minister said.

He also noted the progressive development of trade and economic interaction between the countries. From January-November 2023, bilateral trade grew by 12% and reached $1.3 billion. At the same time, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan continue to work together to bring their trade turnover to $2 billion.
