On January 10, Astana hosted a meeting between Kazakhstan’s JSC Passenger Transportation and O’zbekiston Temir Yo’llari (Uzbekistan Railways) on the development of cooperation in the field of passenger railway transportation between the two countries, the press service of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), Kazakhstan’s national railway company reported.
During the meeting the parties signed an agreement on the operation of tourist trains between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The first step in this direction was the recent launch of the tourist train “Jibek Joly (Silk Road),” organized by the railway companies of the two countries.
The first, four-day “Jibek Joly” train tour was launched in November connecting the cities of Almaty, Turkestan, and Tashkent, followed by “Jibek Joly 2.0” train tour launched along the route Almaty-Turkestan-Tashkent-Samarkand-Shymkent-Almaty in early January.
Given the high popularity of these train tours and their importance for both countries, it was decided to continue the development of the “Jibek Joly” project and consider the possibility of opening similar tourist train routes in other directions. One of such routes is between Astana and Samarkand, which will contribute to the further development of the tourism potential of the two countries.
