According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, 1 billion cubic meters of water were sent to the North Aral Sea from October 2024 to January 2025, 100 million cubic meters more than planned. Thanks to the agreements reached with neighboring Central Asian countries, a total of 1.6 billion cubic meters of water will be sent to the North Aral by the end of March 2025.
Today, the total volume of water in the North Aral Sea is 22.1 billion cubic meters. At the beginning of 2022, it was 18.9 billion cubic meters. It is expected that by the end of 2025, the volume of water in the sea will increase to 23.4 billion cubic meters.
The area of the North Aral Sea continues to increase. Today, it is 3,065 square kilometers, 111 square kilometers more than at the beginning of 2022.
The increase in the volume and area of the North Aral Sea has reduced water mineralization and helped to restore the population of 22 fish species.
Greening work continues in the Aral Sea basin and 4.4 million saplings have been planted on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea.
From 2021 to 2024, seeds and saplings were planted on an area of 475 thousand hectares. This year, planting is planned on 428 thousand hectares. By the end of 2025, the total area of artificial forests on the dried Aral Sea bottom should reach 1.1 million hectares. This will prevent soil erosion, as well as sand and salt storms.
