Russia to build coal-fired power plants in Kazakhstan

On April 17, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliev and the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Nikolay Shulginov signed an agreement on the construction of coal-fired thermal power plants in the cities of Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk in Kazakhstan.

According to Minister Satkaliev, the construction of three new thermal power plants in Kazakhstan’s three regional centers — Semey, Kokshetau, and Ust-Kamenogorsk — will give a strong impetus to their further development. He also highlighted that these regions of Kazakhstan have large reserves of coal to fuel the new power plants.

The Kazakh Energy Ministry said that construction of the first power plant is to start this year.
