Tajikistan’s Low Average Salary in Central Asia Explained

Tajikistan has the lowest average salary among Central Asian countries, according to the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee.

In September last year, the average nominal monthly salary in Kazakhstan was $817.2, in Uzbekistan $437.8, and in Kyrgyzstan $411.2. In Tajikistan, it stood at $242.8.

The CIS Interstate Statistical Committee said that up-to-date data on official nominal wages in Turkmenistan were not available, as the last update of such information on the website of the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan was published in 2023.

Tajikistan has the lowest average salary among Central Asian countries, a fact that highlights the economic challenges faced by its citizens. Despite being rich in natural resources and having a young, vibrant population, the country struggles with high unemployment rates and limited job opportunities. This situation is exacerbated by a lack of foreign investment and a reliance on remittances from Tajiks working abroad, particularly in Russia.

The average salary in Tajikistan is significantly lower than in neighboring countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
