Turkmenistan’s state news agency TDH reported that on February 10, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council) of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had a telephone conversation with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian.
Berdimuhamedov informed about the agreement with Türkiye’s BOTAŞ company on the transit of Turkmen natural gas through Iran to Türkiye under a swap scheme.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on February 11, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed an agreement between BOTAŞ and Turkmenistan’s state gas company, Turkmengaz, saying that “gas flow is planned to start on March 1, 2025”.
For decades, gas-rich Turkmenistan has strived to diversify its natural gas exports.
Today, China is the only importer of Turkmen gas.
With the new agreement with Turkmenistan, Türkiye has taken another step to becoming a major hub for the transit of natural gas to Europe.
