US government improves access to drinking water in Tajikistan

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has inaugurated a newly rehabilitated water supply system in Tajikistan’s Jomi District, bringing safe and reliable drinking water to 1,860 residents from 309 households. This is a part of the USAID Rural Water Supply activity, which is revitalizing water systems in 12 communities across Tajikistan through innovative public-private partnerships, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Prior to this intervention, only 86 households — approximately 550 people — had access to the village’s water system.  The remaining majority of residents faced significant challenges in securing safe drinking water, leading to widespread health concerns and an urgent demand for solutions.  USAID worked with the private water operator in Jomi to rehabilitate, extend the system and also implement an electronic billing system and household water meters for efficient service and equitable access.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on December 13, USAID Tajikistan Mission Director John Riordan emphasized the transformative power of collaboration and access to safe water. “This stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we unite the strengths of both the public and private sectors for a common goal. USAID is proud to contribute to these efforts that not only improve the health of the Tajik people but also foster public-private partnerships and empower local communities.”

Over the past five years, USAID has constructed or rehabilitated more than 30 drinking water supply systems across Tajikistan, benefiting more than 100,000 people.
