Uzbekistan’s 2025 Year of Environmental Protection

Uzbekistan’s Commitment to a Green Economy in 2025

On January 27, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev chaired a meeting on the draft State Program for the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy.

Uzbekistan is transitioning to a green economy. Over the past three years, 16 large solar and wind power plants with a total capacity of 3.5 gigawatts have been commissioned across the country, along with 35 small hydropower plants. The number of homes equipped with solar panels has exceeded 60,000. Large-scale afforestation efforts are conducted annually as part of the “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) program.

2025 has been declared the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy in Uzbekistan. In this regard, a draft state program was developed.

One of the key priorities of the state program is energy. The share of green energy in Uzbekistan’s total power capacity has reached 16 percent. This year, the goal is to increase this figure to 26 percent. To achieve this, an additional 16 large solar and wind power plants with a capacity of 3.5 gigawatts, five major hydropower plants with a capacity of 160 megawatts, and energy storage facilities with a capacity of 1.8 gigawatts will be commissioned.

Solar panel installations will continue to be promoted at state enterprises, industrial and residential buildings.

As part of the “Yashil Makon” program, 200 million trees are planted annually. Over the past three years, 698 gardens and 316 public parks have been established. Additionally, green areas covering approximately 2 million hectares have been created on the dried-up part of the Aral Sea.

Continuing these efforts, 18 forestry enterprises specializing in seedling cultivation will be established this year. These forestry enterprises are expected to grow 123 million seedlings this year.

Uzbekistan is making significant strides towards a sustainable future, as the nation has declared 2025 the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy.” Under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan is committed to transforming its economy by prioritizing renewable energy sources and implementing innovative environmental policies. This initiative aligns with global trends towards sustainability and aims to enhance the quality of life for its citizens while preserving the environment.

The focus on a green economy in Uzbekistan is evident through various programs and projects, including the Yashil Makon program, which emphasizes afforestation and the restoration of natural habitats. This initiative aims to combat desertification and improve air quality, contributing to a healthier ecosystem. The government recognizes that afforestation is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Uzbekistan is also investing heavily in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power. With its abundant sunlight and favorable wind conditions, the country has the potential to become a leader in renewable energy production in Central Asia. The government has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in its overall energy mix, aiming for 25% by 2030. This shift not only supports environmental goals but also enhances energy security and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

The commitment to a green economy is further reflected in various legislative measures and international partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable practices. Uzbekistan is actively engaging with global organizations to share knowledge and resources, ensuring that its transition to a green economy is both effective and inclusive.

In conclusion, Uzbekistan’s declaration of 2025 as the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy marks a pivotal moment in the country’s development. With initiatives led by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the focus on renewable energy, afforestation, and sustainable practices positions Uzbekistan as a forward-thinking nation dedicated to environmental stewardship and economic resilience. As the country moves towards a greener future, it sets an example for others in the region to follow.
