Kazakhstan will receive 16 billion cubic meters of water from Uzbekistan by October 1, 2025, 1 billion cubic meters more than during the previous water management year (October 2023 – October 2024).
The agreement was reached on February 5 by Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources Shavkat Khamrayev.
The two countries also agreed to jointly repair transboundary canals, improving the water supply to farmers in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan and the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan.
Another issue on the agenda was the installation of automated measuring stations on transboundary Syr Darya River. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan earlier agreed to install meters to calculate the exact volume of water consumed by both countries.
According to Nurzhigitov, the countries have already identified locations for the first 10 measuring stations, five in each country. This month, a joint working group together with representatives of international organizations will meet to discuss further steps in this project.
