To create a Horse Breeding Institute in Kazakhstan in the shortest possible time was a task set by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the first forum of agricultural workers, held on November 15 in Astana.
Fulfilling the task, the Kazakh Research Institute of Horse Breeding and Forage Production has been established in Aktobe, the Ministry of Agriculture reported.
The main tasks of the new institute are conducting research aimed at improving the breeding qualities of horses, developing horse breeding and promoting domestic breeds to foreign markets. The institute’s ambitious goal is to increase the number of breeding horses by 6-7% over the next five years.
An important task for selection and breeding work is expanding the breeding areas of local horse breeds, such as the Kostanay and Adai, as well as the highly productive Mugalzhar and Kushum genotypes and Kazakh meat and dairy horses.
The institute will also train horse breeders and establish a veterinary clinic for horses.
Priority areas of scientific research until 2035 in productive horse breeding will be increasing the genetic potential of horses in the domestic population and their widespread introduction into commercial farms in different regions of Kazakhstan.
The institute also plans to cooperate with foreign research centers, universities, and laboratories.
