Kazakhstan and Korea strengthen strategic partnership and economic cooperation

On June 12, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited Kazakhstan and held talks with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The two leaders also took part in the Kazakh-Korean business forum in Astana.

During the negotiations, the parties discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation in such areas as energy, infrastructure and industry, mechanical engineering, trade, transport and logistics, digitalization and aerospace industry, financial sector, education, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, tourism and culture, and ecology.

President Tokayev emphasized that the two countries pay special attention to the development of trade, economic and investment ties, adding that today Korea is one of the five largest investors in Kazakhstan.

“Over the period until last year, the volume of investments from this country reached $9.6 billion. Both sides expressed interest in increasing this indicator. There are more than 700 companies with Korean capital operating in Kazakhstan,” the Kazakh president said.

According to Tokayev, 120 thousand ethnic Koreans in Kazakhstan play an important role and make an invaluable contribution to strengthening Kazakh-Korean relations. And more than 1 thousand Kazakh students studying in Korea are a “golden bridge of friendship” between the two friendly countries.

The President of Kazakhstan emphasized that “Our countries are interested in strengthening multilateral cooperation. We agreed to further develop the dialogue in the Central Asia + Korea format. Kazakhstan supports the K-Silk Road concept put forward by the Republic of Korea. I support the Korean side’s proposal to hold the first summit in this format next year in Seoul. This initiative will give a new impetus to bilateral and multilateral cooperation.”

Yoon Suk Yeol pointed out the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership and economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea.

“During negotiations with the President of Kazakhstan, we agreed to increase the effectiveness of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Korea. As part of today’s visit, we reached a number of agreements regarding the electricity sector and the supply of critical minerals,” said the Korean President.
