Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan will build a new border checkpoint, Kazinform reported quoting Kazakh Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev as saying following the meeting of the Kazakh and Kyrgyz prime ministers in Astana on February 24.
According to Karabayev, in 2024, the volume of automobile transportations between the two countries reached 2.4 million tons of cargo, surging by 19% since 2023.
The minister also spoke about modernization and expansion of the existing border checkpoints.
“This year, we plan to fully modernize the Besagash border checkpoint. Construction works will start in April. The Sortobe checkpoint does not accept heavy trucks now. We plan to repair this checkpoint and launch transit of heavy trucks through it in May,” Karabayev said.
The sides also discussed the possibility of building the ninth checkpoint on the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border.
“It is Aksu-Kamyshanovka checkpoint. The Kazakh side has already begun preparing the relevant documents. Construction of the new border checkpoint will start next year,” the minister said.
