On August 22, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in Tajikistan on a state visit and held talks with President Emomali Rahmon.

Following the talks, the presidents signed a Treaty on allied relations between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

President Rahmon emphasized the historical importance of signing the Treaty and stated that “this important document will undoubtedly open a new page in the history of cooperation between the two countries, and will become a solid basis for our strategic partnership and alliance”.

The Kazakh-Tajik talks discussed further cooperation in political, trade, economic, investment, industry, energy, finance, banking, and agriculture areas.

It was emphasized that Kazakhstan has a leading position among Tajikistan’s trade partners, and the indicators of trade between the two countries are steadily growing. Thus, the volume of trade between the two countries increased by 20 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.

The parties agreed to increase bilateral trade to $2 billion.

There are 92 joint ventures in Tajikistan with the investment of Kazakhstan and 89 joint ventures with the participation of Tajik entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan. Over the past 5 years, $700 million has been invested in the economy of Tajikistan from Kazakhstan.

The negotiations emphasized the necessity of speeding up the implementation process of the project of establishing three logistics centers for the delivery of export products of Tajikistan to Kazakhstan.

It was said that today more than 80 percent of Tajikistan’s fruit and vegetable exports go to Kazakhstan. A large amount of wheat, flour and other grain products are imported from Kazakhstan to Tajikistan.

At the meeting, satisfaction was expressed with the level of cooperation in the field of transportation and transit, cargo and passenger transport, and the opening of bus routes and regular flights between the capitals of the two countries.
