On June 16, the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty, Kazakhstan began the first delivery of molybdenum-99/technetium-99 generators to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy reported on its website.
On June 17, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliev visited the Institute of Nuclear Physics, which is the only research organization in Kazakhstan in the field of the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
Satkaliev was shown the production of radiopharmaceuticals, which are used for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It was announced during the visit that on June 16, the Institute began the first delivery of molybdenum-99/technetium-99 generators to Kyrgyzstan under an agreement with the IAEA. In addition, the Institute produces and supplies the radioactive isotope cobalt-57 to Russia, Germany, the USA, and France.
The Minister inspected the work of the storage facility for spent sources of ionizing radiation, which was created in partnership with the US Department of Energy and the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The storage facility was put into operation in 2022 and is designed to ensure the safe placement of ampoule sources of ionizing radiation for industrial and medical purposes upon expiration of their service life.
The Energy Minister was also shown the VVR-K nuclear research reactor, on the basis of which medical radioisotopes and gamma sources for industry are produced.
