Kazakhstan cancels Astana International Forum amid floods

Kazakhstan has cancelled the Astana International Forum that was scheduled for June 13-14 this year due to the current unprecedented spring floods that hit the northern regions of the country.

Central Asia’s leading international conference, the Astana International Forum 2024 was expected to gather government and business leaders from around the world to exchange perspectives on the most pressing issues of the day and identify new avenues for cooperation.

“Due to the severe flooding in Kazakhstan and the need to allocate financial resources for the relief efforts and aid for affected citizens, I have made the decision to cancel the Astana International Forum that was scheduled for June 13-14 this year,” President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev wrote in a post on the X (formerly Twitter).

“I sincerely hope that the invited participants will treat this decision with understanding. The Astana International Forum will resume its activities in 2025,” the president added.

The inaugural Astana International Forum was held in 2023.
