Kazakhstan increases electricity supply to Kyrgyzstan after Bishkek heating plant breakdown

Kazakhstan increased the supply of electricity from its Zhambyl power plant to neighboring Kyrgyzstan following an explosion at the Bishkek thermal power plant on February 2.

Three workers of the power plant were seriously injured in the explosion, which caused the plant’s breakdown and left parts of the capital city without hot water and heat.

On behalf of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, on February 3, the Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu held a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, Jeenbek Kulubaev to discuss issues of coordinating assistance in resolving the situation around the accident at the Bishkek thermal power plant. The Kyrgyz foreign minister informed his Kazakh counterpart about the measures being taken to restore the operation of the thermal power plant, and also expressed gratitude for the support provided by Kazakhstan and the prompt resolution of the issue related to increasing the supply of electricity to Kyrgyzstan, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported.

After the accident, Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov has ordered to fully modernize the Bishkek thermal power plant.
