Maersk offers rail-sea shipping service along Trans-Caspian Transport Route

Maersk (Denmark), one of the world’s largest container shipping operators, has published shipping tariff rates for its rail-sea service along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor, Logistan reports.

The Maersk service along the TITR, an international multimodal transport corridor with the length of 11,000 km, runs from China to Europe via Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Black Sea, and Turkey.

Estimated shipping durations from China’s Xi’an, Yiwu or Zhengzhou are as follows:

to Baku (Azerbaijan) – 12-14 days,

to Ambarli (Turkey) – 23-28 days,

to Constanta (Romania) – 31-34 days,

to Duisburg, Budapest, Milan – 32-37 days,

to Valencia, Barcelona – 44-47 days.

According to Maersk’s promotional rate, shipping a 40-foot container from Shanghai to Poti (Georgia), for instance, will take about two weeks and will cost $7,980.

According to Maersk, risks of shipping along the Middle Corridor include the weather on the Caspian Sea, which is very unstable in winter and may affect the service schedule.

Transportation along the TITR is growing steadily. In 2023, 2.8 million tons of cargo were transported along the Trans-Caspian Route, compared to about 1.7 million tons in 2022. By 2027, the capacity of the TITR is planned to increase to 10 million tons.
