New book of Uzbek author brings ancient Great Silk Road to life

‘The Legends of Great Silk Road: Adventures of the Spirit of Time’ is a new book by Uzbek author Gulchekhra-Begim Makhmudova, published in English by Hertfordshire Press in London.

This book gives an opportunity to discover for your children (and for yourself) the magical world of the legendary Great Silk Road.

In ‘Adventures of the Spirit of Time’, four friends—Amir, Salma, Tohir, and Zuhra—embark on an unforgettable journey across centuries, led by the mysterious Spirit of Time and a magical bird. As they dive into the legends of the Great Silk Road, they don’t just witness history; they live it.

From encounters with legendary warriors and wise scholars to befriending emperors, queens, and mystical figures, the children weave their way through myth and reality. In this first installment of an extraordinary four-part series, they begin their quest in ancient Khiva and Taj Mahal, crossing paths with heroes like Queen Tomiris and the astronomer Ulugbek.

The children’s interactive journey, solving riddles and exploring historical landmarks, mirrors a hands-on engagement with history.

The book is beautifully illustrated, which makes the stories even more engaging and brings the ancient world to life.

“The author’s language is richly descriptive, painting vivid scenes of ancient cities, bustling bazaars, and the expansive steppes. The tales are not merely escapist adventures but are imbued with lessons on bravery, unity, and the significance of preserving cultural identity,” says Christian Gessl, a social activist, culture figure, journalist, and filmmaker.
