Twenty-two U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Trainees arrived in Kyrgyzstan earlier this month to support English language education in secondary schools in Chuy, Naryn, Issyk-Kul, Talas, Osh, and Jalal-Abad regions. The Trainees have come to Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of the Kyrgyz Republic’s Ministry of Education and Science.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, the Trainees are the 30th Peace Corps cohort to serve in the Kyrgyz Republic since 1993. The Trainees will receive 11 weeks of pre-service training in how to work effectively in the Kyrgyz Republic’s educational system.
The training will include Kyrgyz language and culture, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and co-teaching with local teachers. Only Trainees who successfully complete the training program will be sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers in August and start their two years of service in the Kyrgyz Republic. The Volunteers will work alongside local teachers across the country to build capacity to teach English.
The new cohort brings the number of Peace Corps Volunteers and Trainees in the Kyrgyz Republic to a total of 53.
