Olzhas Bektenov named as new prime minister of Kazakhstan

Olzhas Bektenov, the head of the presidential administration, has been named as the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

Bektenov was nominated for the post by Kazakhstan’s ruling Amanat party on February 6. On the same day, Bektenov’s candidacy was presented to the Kazakh parliament, the Majilis, at a plenary session attended by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The candidacy of the new head of the Government was supported by 69 deputies, 7 deputies abstained.

On February 5, Tokayev accepted the previous government’s resignation.

Bektenov, 43, has served as head of the presidential administration since April 2023. Before that, he was head of Kazakhstan’s Anti-Corruption Agency.

“Olzhas Bektenov is an experienced civil servant. He has extensive knowledge in economics and other areas, has high organizational skills, is disciplined, honest, and hardworking. Therefore, I think we will have enough opportunities to achieve the goals facing the country’s economy,” President Tokayev said at the plenary session today.
