The CYBER TUMAR informational and educational campaign launched in Kazakhstan

UNICEF and its partners launched the CYBER TUMAR informational and educational campaign in Kazakhstan on International Safer Internet Day. On this day, the world strives to draw attention to the responsible, safe, and productive use of digital technologies, especially among the most vulnerable users – children and adolescents, the Delegation of the European Union to Kazakhstan reported on February 6.

CYBER TUMAR is an informational and educational campaign in Kazakhstan created with support from UNICEF Kazakhstan and the European Union. It aims to help children develop a safe user experience on the internet and learn how to handle potential risks.

CYBER TUMAR is a set of informational tools that helps users safely navigate cyberspace. The tools include social awareness campaign posters, informational posters describing the basic steps to take in response to various threats, materials with practical advice from experts, and educational videos among additional resources.

Nasimzhan Ospanova, Chairperson of Kazakhstan’s Committee for the Protection of Children’s Rights, said: “The internet is no longer only a means of gathering information but also of communicating. Therefore, people should be taught how best to use the internet’s communication capabilities to maximize its benefits and minimize its risks from an early age. Conducting the ‘CYBER TUMAR’ informational and educational campaign is an important and timely measure to help ensure children’s information security and strengthen parents’ responsibility to monitor their children’s access to information online.”

Kestutis Jankauskas, Ambassador from the European Union to Kazakhstan, stated: “The internet has become an integral part of our daily lives and will certainly be an even more important element for our children. As parents, we strive to ensure the safety of our children in various spheres – at school, on the street, and of course, in the digital world. We believe that our campaign will help raise awareness among both parents and children. Together, we can create a safe and enjoyable online space for all children.”

Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Kazakhstan, Laetitia Bazzi-Veil, emphasized: “We hope that CYBER TUMAR will become a modern symbol of protection for Kazakhstani children from online threats. Every child makes not only real, but also first virtual steps. And it is very important to give a child protection as early as possible, which will help him/her to grow up safely in the digital space. CYBER TUMAR will contribute to better protect children from inappropriate content, contact and behavior on the Internet.”

The campaign focuses on the following main online threats: cyberbullying, content that is inappropriate or banned for children, digital risks to children’s safety and privacy, and childhood internet addiction. The awareness-raising campaign was launched with the distribution of social awareness posters addressing these topics.
