Turkmen city of Arkadag awarded at World Smart City Expo

At the award ceremony of the World Smart City Expo (WSCE) held last week in Goyang, Republic of Korea, the Turkmen city of Arkadag received three awards: the Smart City Excellence Award, the Foreign Smart City Award, and the WSCE 2024 Contribution Award, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reported.

Built from scratch 30 km south of Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat, the city of Arkadag was officially opened on June 29, 2023. The city was named in honor of former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who is officially entitled Arkadag (“Protector” in Turkmen). The “smart” city was designed to be home for 70,000 people, and cost billions of dollars to construct.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Deryageldi Orazov, Chairman of the State Committee for the Construction of Arkadag City, stressed that the awards were a recognition of Turkmenistan’s successes in the sphere of urban development.

More than 60 countries, including Korea, Turkmenistan, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Denmark, Finland, and Israel, participated in the World Smart City Expo 2024.
