Uzbekistan: Lawmaker proposes restrictions for citizens who do not know Uzbek language

Alisher Kadyrov, the leader of the National Revival party and vice-speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Uzbek parliament, has proposed that those who do not know the Uzbek language should not work in the civil service and should not be able to use government services in Uzbekistan, Radio Ozodlik reported.

Kadyrov made such comments in response to a statement by the Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Volodin, who said that “it is important that people who come to work in Russia know the Russian language and respect the traditions of the country.”

In his telegram channel, Kadyrov wrote that “those who are going to work in Russia must know the Russian language,” but for some reason Russians living in Uzbekistan do not need to know the Uzbek language.

According to Kadyrov, representatives of all nationalities living in Uzbekistan and citizens of this country should know the national language.

Kadyrov stated: “In addition to creating conditions for compatriots of other nationalities to study their native language and values in kindergarten and primary school, the Uzbek language should be legally defined as a compulsory language.”

In January, Kadyrov proposed limiting the hours of instruction in Russian in Uzbekistan’s schools and said that Russian is “used disproportionately in education and on television”.
